Hardtack was used on both sides, very hard type cracker, sometimes with worms in them, only way you could eat it, was to make a type of stew with water. South ran extremely short of rations and coffee due to the blockade, they were eating goober peas(boiled peanuts) and the coffee was made from chicory I believe.
